WooCommerce Checkout Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

WooCommerce checkout broken? These are the most common causes and step-by-step fixes for checkout errors, blank pages, and failed payments.

A broken WooCommerce checkout is a store owner's nightmare. Every minute your checkout is down, you're losing real money. Whether customers are seeing a blank white page, getting stuck in a redirect loop, or receiving vague error messages — these issues are almost always fixable once you know where to look.

This guide covers the most common causes of WooCommerce checkout failures and gives you a clear path to diagnosing and resolving them.

Start Here: Enable WooCommerce Logging

Before you change anything, enable logging so you can see what's actually going wrong. Go to WooCommerce > Status > Logs and look for recent error entries around the time checkout fails. Payment gateway errors, PHP warnings, and plugin conflicts often leave traces here that point directly to the cause.

Also open your browser's developer console (F12) on the checkout page and look for JavaScript errors — these are frequently the culprit for buttons that don't respond or order forms that won't submit.

Common Causes and Fixes

1. Plugin Conflict

This is the number one cause of broken WooCommerce checkouts. A plugin that modifies checkout behavior — a coupon plugin, a shipping calculator, a payment gateway, a security plugin — gets updated and conflicts with WooCommerce or your theme.

How to test:

  • Deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and your theme
  • Try checkout with a test product
  • If it works, reactivate plugins one at a time until checkout breaks again
  • That last-activated plugin is your culprit

Contact the plugin developer with your WordPress version, WooCommerce version, and a description of the conflict. Most reputable plugins fix compatibility issues within a few days.

2. Theme Conflict

Some themes override WooCommerce template files in ways that break with newer versions of WooCommerce. To test whether your theme is the issue, temporarily switch to Storefront (WooCommerce's official free theme) and attempt checkout.

If checkout works with Storefront, your theme's WooCommerce templates are outdated. You or your developer need to update the theme's template overrides to match the current WooCommerce version.

3. JavaScript Errors Blocking the Checkout Form

WooCommerce's checkout relies heavily on JavaScript — for updating order totals, validating fields, and processing payment fields from gateways like Stripe. If any JavaScript error occurs on the page, it can silently break the submit button.

Common JS error sources:

  • Minification plugins that incorrectly combine WooCommerce scripts
  • Caching plugins serving stale JS files
  • Ad blockers or browser extensions (test in a private window with no extensions)

Quick fix: Clear all caches (your plugin cache, browser cache, and CDN cache) and try checkout again. If you use a minification plugin, add WooCommerce's checkout scripts to the exclusion list.

4. WooCommerce Pages Not Set Correctly

WooCommerce requires specific pages (Cart, Checkout, My Account, Shop) to be assigned in settings. If these pages were accidentally deleted or reassigned, checkout will fail.

Check: WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced — verify that each required page is set to the correct page. If a page is missing, WooCommerce has a built-in tool to recreate them: WooCommerce > Status > Tools > Create default WooCommerce pages.

5. Payment Gateway Configuration Errors

If the checkout form loads but orders fail to process, the problem is almost certainly your payment gateway configuration.

Common issues:

  • API keys entered incorrectly (live vs. test mode mismatch)
  • SSL certificate expired or not active (required for all payment processing)
  • Webhook URLs not updated after a site migration
  • Payment gateway plugin not updated to latest version

Test with WooCommerce's built-in Cash on Delivery payment method. If that completes an order successfully, the problem is specific to your payment gateway, not WooCommerce itself.

6. The Checkout Page Returns a Blank White Page

A white screen on checkout almost always means a PHP fatal error. This is often caused by:

  • A plugin or theme update introducing incompatible code
  • A PHP version mismatch (your host upgraded PHP and old plugins aren't compatible)
  • Exhausted PHP memory limit

To diagnose: Enable WordPress debug mode by adding these lines to your wp-config.php:

define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);

Then check /wp-content/debug.log for the actual error message.

7. HTTPS/Mixed Content Issues

All WooCommerce checkout pages must be served over HTTPS. If your SSL certificate is expired, misconfigured, or your site has mixed content (some assets loading over HTTP), browsers will block payment fields from loading.

Use the free SSL Insecure Content Fixer plugin to automatically resolve mixed content warnings, and verify your SSL certificate is valid via your hosting control panel.

Once you believe you've resolved the issue, run through a complete checkout flow:

  • Add a product to cart
  • Apply a coupon (if applicable)
  • Enter shipping address and verify shipping rates appear
  • Complete payment with a test card (use Stripe's test mode or WooCommerce's test gateway)
  • Confirm the order confirmation email is sent
  • Confirm the order appears in WooCommerce > Orders

Don't assume a fix is complete until you've verified the entire flow end to end.
